Waldo's Gift is a three-piece band formed in Bristol, UK in 2017 — made up of Alun Elliot-Williams [guitar], Harry Stoneham [bass], and James Vine [drums]. With a penchant for improvisation, their sound vacillates from the sophistication of modern jazz to cacophonies of experimental electronic music, all through the lens of various rock & metal influences.
'We formed after the offer of a weekly residency at The Gallimaufry in Bristol. As a trio of guitar, bass and drums we were super keen not to sound like the average guitar band. We all loved electronic music, like Bonobo, Aphex Twin & Floating Points, and we took real inspiration from DJs when crafting our improvised sets. But we still loved straight up guitarists like Wayne Krantz.'
I’m not even sure it makes sense, but I would describe Waldo’s Gift as kinda the live band equivalent of producing jazz tracks using Battles & Explosions In The Sky samples. They're all great players, but it’s the way Alun uses his delay pedals that really sets them apart from your average jazzy-jam band, IMO. You should definitely give them a listen.
